LIKE IN THE CLOUDS

KOH KOOD ISLAND, THAILAND

Just an hour’s flight from Bangkok lies Koh Kood: an island paradise that is home to the Soneva Kiri hotel, probably one of the most exclusive in all of Thailand. A hotel that has everything, except for the crowds.

Just from looking at the photographs one can imagine what it is like to be up in the clouds. It’s Soneva Kiri: an exceptional luxury resort set among the tropical vegetation of a small island, with pristine beaches and coconut trees that are unspoiled by conventional tourism. It is part of the group of islands known as ‘The Maldives of Thailand’.

Villas made from wood and fine materials —all of which are truly spectacular— are spread across a dreamlike landscape. The exquisitely decorated interiors, extremely high standards of luxury, and the views over the surrounding paradise are incomparable. There is also a spa and a gym, five restaurants to choose from, a highlight of which is Tree Top Dining, situated in a real treetop which only has… ssssshhhhh… one table.

The service at the hotel is excellent. Especially Friday: that was the name of Robinson Crusoe’s companion in the well-known novel by Daniel Defoe, and here he is responsible for taking care of everyone’s needs. Each guest has their own Friday.

The activities on offer at Soneva Kiri are incomparable. Private picnics in the heart of the jungle, private cinema screenings under the stars, exclusive fine dining experiences and wine and chocolate tastings, fishing and cooking lessons, customised scuba-diving activities and even star gazing: it’s spectacular! The resort is home to Thailand’s second most powerful telescope, which brings the moon to our guests and puts the stars at their feet.

The surroundings couldn’t be more extraordinary. Koh Kood, at twenty-five kilometres long and twelve wide, is the fourth largest island in Thailand. An hour away from Bangkok by plane, this is a quiet island with virtually no nightlife beyond the resort itself. An idyllic setting for cycling, scuba-diving, snorkelling or gently rowing a kayak in search of the perfect beach, or maybe to enjoy a magnificent sunset by a nearby mangrove.

Besides sunbathing, this is a fantastic destination for sport fishing and hiking, making it the perfect place to escape with your partner or the whole family.

It is well worth escaping into the jungle. You will discover fantastic places like the Klongchao waterfalls and the Macca Tree forest, where the trees are around five hundred years old. It is also an ideal place to discover the secrets of Thai culture. Not far from the resort is the fishing village of Ao Salad – one of the first settlements on the island. In their colourful boats, the local fishermen continue to use traditional techniques to catch the best fish and seafood in the area. After returning from fishing, you can sample truly authentic Thai cuisine, created mostly from vegetables and fish.

The F&S ‘MUST SEES’

  • An island that is soft like cotton and sweet like ambrosia. A quiet place where nightlife is almost non-existent beyond what goes on in the resort itself. A slice of paradise with unspoiled beaches, mangroves and exotic wildlife which, fortunately, has been left untouched by mass tourism.
  • Listen to the sounds of nature, the rustle of leaves and the birdsong from the treetops, while you savour an unforgettable culinary experience.
  • The treatments available at the spas will take you on a fabulous sensorial journey. They are renowned for the quality of their baths that use selected Thai herbs, their silk facial masks, the Ayurveda hot oils and their use of a wide range of speciality wellness products.
  • Guests of Soneva Kiri are always surprised by how much is on offer: exclusive picnics in a nature reserve, private cinema screenings on the beach under the light of the stars, fine dining experiences like chocolate and wine tastings, fishing activities, cooking lessons for the whole family...
  • Discover the secrets of the ocean with the help of a marine biologist, go scuba-diving and discover amazing coral on the seabed or snorkelling to explore the reefs.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS…
"Ingenious, innovative and surprising. Ticks all the boxes that put it in a 'special category' among luxury hotels in Thailand".
