Who has never dreamed of staying in the best hotel of the most beautiful city on the Planet? That place is the Belmond Hotel Cipriani of Venice: recognised as one of the most famous and luxurious hotels in the world. Ah…la Dolce Vita!
The Belmond Hotel Cipriani is situated on the Venetian island of Giudecca, and has spectacular views, ranging from the entrance to the Grand Canal. Opened as a hotel in 1958 by the well-known Italian restaurateur Giuseppe Cipriani, it quickly acquired one of the best reputations in Italy, immediately winning over the most demanding travellers, in one of the most famous cities in the world.
It was designed by the Parisian Gérard Gallet, who selected exquisite fabrics and elegant furniture to enhance the magnificent views over the lake, the adjacent palaces and the gardens of the island of Giudecca. He even recovered the cultivation of vineyards that had formerly belonged to the family of the legendary Casanova.
Because of this particular charm, for decades the best stars on celluloid have stayed here while rehearsing their legendary scenes in the city of canals: Katherine Hepburn’s accidental bath in Summertime, Harrison Ford in the third instalment of Indiana Jones, in which the professor and adventurer follows in the footsteps of his fictional father, Sean Connery. For this reason, the hotel offers its guests many of these films that are set in Venice, for their private enjoyment in their rooms.
The hotel has the benefit of a private marina, its own boutique, a club for children, a luxury spa with five treatment rooms ‒ one of which is reserved for couples ‒ steam rooms, saunas, a hairdressing salon, a heated saltwater Olympic swimming-pool, a fitness centre, a tennis court and, of course, round-the-clock, free transfers to St. Mark’s Square in the private boat ‘Shirley’.
And also, the ‘tour of the senses’: fragrances, chocolate shops, violins, and even an exceptionally interesting visit to one of the most spectacular Venetian palazzi, the Ca’Bernardo, which is closed to the public. A unique visit which includes, naturally, Venice’s most easily recognised canals and some of the corners preferred by the stars of Hollywood during their visits to this city.
Back at the hotel, The Belmond Cipriani has a last, important secret: from here one can admire St. Mark’s Square through the windows of the restored palazzetto Nani Barbaro, which has been attached to the hotel since April, 1998. It is a fifteenth-century aristocrat’s residence which the Cipriani reserves for those of its guests for whom privacy is an essential requisite. It is one of the places in Venice with the best possible views of the Palace of the Doges across the Giudecca Canal.
