CRUISE THROUGH EGYPT

FORTY CENTURIES OF HISTORY OBSERVE US

With the spirit of the archaeologists who discovered Tutankhamen’s tomb, these Nile cruises venture deep into one of the most enigmatic ancient cultures in history and unravel the mysteries of an extraordinary civilisation.

It is said that Napoleon Bonaparte yelled ‘Forty centuries look down on us’ to his soldiers from atop the great pyramids. Greek traveller Herodotus found a different way to express the same thing two thousand five hundred years earlier: ‘Egypt contains more wonders than any other country’. And it is true that the list of attractions in this country is pharaonic. Although Egypt is synonymous with nature, from the floor of the Red Sea – a popular destination for scuba-diving – to the route of the oases through the desert; the fact is that Egypt is essentially a destination that oozes archaeology, myths and a mysterious past.

This is demonstrated by the colossal pyramids of Giza and their famous sphinx, the spectacular Abu Simbel, the secrets of Elephantine island, the beauty of Luxor and the Karnak temple, the endless Valley of the Kings, the incredible Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, the vast necropolis of Saqqara, the Abydos temple or the tomb of queen Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari. All of this without forgetting the rest of the History with a capital H that is evident in old Cairo, the mysteries of Alexandria, the Biblical significance of Mount Sinai and the Arab dream that is the mausoleum of Aga Khan, as well as the countless secrets of Arab cuisine.

All of these wonders appear before the eyes (and all the other senses) of visitors as they sail up the Nile and enjoy the most memorable sunset they will ever witness. These are the things of the Sun God Ra, and the secret covenant that the Egyptians still keep with the gods of their ancestors.

The F&S ‘MUST SEES’

  • It goes without saying that Cairo is truly unique. It is the largest metropolis in the Arab world, known as 'the mother of all cities' to the Egyptians.
  • Just like in Agatha Christie's stories, it is still possible to sail the Nile with all the comforts... and none of the frights of a mystery novel!.
  • Egypt is water: the river Nile, and earth: the desert. A view of the world that can only be disrupted by the magical realism of an oasis and the footprints of ancient pharaohs.
  • Discover the diversity of Egypt: experience the Arab traditions, the Nubian cuisine or an orthodox Coptic mass in one of Cairo's Christian neighbourhoods.
  • Gods, tombs and sages hide in the Egyptian sand, archaeology's paradise. Experts say that only 30% of that past has been discovered.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS…
"When asked about what he saw through a little hole in Tutankhamen's tomb, the British archaeologist said, 'Wonderful things'. This became the most apt adjective to describe the land of the pharaohs".

Howard Carter, archaeologist.
