VICTORIA FALLS

THE CALL OF AFRICA

The Victoria Falls are the cherry on top of a trip that follows in the footsteps of the great explorer David Livingstone. A destination that combines adventure, beauty and emotion in equal measures. This emotion is also known as ‘the call of Africa’.

Africans still call it Mosi-oa-Tunya or thundering smoke, the roar from the cascading water of the Zambezi river can be heard for miles around. The falls are approximately 1.7 kilometres wide with a drop of 108 metres. Even though they are not the highest in the world, they carry – after the rainy season – about 500 million litres of water from the Zambezi river every minute. An astonishing exhibition of the power of nature.

The British explorer David Livingstone – the first European to ever see the Victoria Falls – wrote about them in his journals: ‘No one can imagine the beauty of the view (…) scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight’. He named them ‘Victoria Falls’, in homage to the sovereign who ruled the British Empire at the time and because of the exceptional nature of the discovery.

Along with the waterfalls, in Zambia you can also enjoy the uninhibited displays of Africa’s wildlife through a varied range of photographic safaris that are possible thanks to the appealing selection of lodges and national parks. There is also a wide and interesting variety of adventure sports: kayaking, rafting, 4x4 trails, horse riding, bungee jumping, etc.

A place of extraordinary natural beauty, ideal for a trip with your partner, family or children. Enjoy unique accommodations and the opportunity to hire a helicopter and admire the landscape like an angel in flight, as Livingstone so eloquently put it. Fortunately, the legend of brave explorers and intrepid adventurers lives on.

The F&S ‘MUST SEES’

  • The roar of the Zambezi river or the phenomenon of inverted rain caused by water falling so hard on the rocks that it leaves its observers soaked through: Mother Nature in her purest state.
  • A private breakfast with perfect views of the spectacular Victoria Falls, from a vantage point that doubles as a pleasant shelter thanks to the surrounding acacias.
  • Adrenaline rushes abound along the Zambezi river, whether it's navigating the waters or practising adventure sports such as rafting or bungee jumping from an iron bridge which is 150 meters above the water.
  • Photographic safari. Don't forget that Zambia was a pioneer of the night safari and is still one of the most authentic places in Africa to enjoy this experience. Many endemic species live here, such as the Thornnicroft giraffe, the Cook gnu and the Puku antelope.
  • Fly over Africa's wildest waterfalls in a helicopter: maybe this is the way angels observe the Earth's beauty.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS…
"Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight".

David Livingstone, the first European to witness the Victoria Falls.
